Tanzanian Safari Destinations

Tanzania is home to some of the most diverse and iconic safari destinations in Africa. From the vast plains of the Serengeti to the wildlife-rich Ngorongoro Crater and the remote wilderness of Ruaha and Katavi, each region offers a different perspective on a Tanzania safari. At Valhalla Safaris, our experience across these landscapes allows us to guide travellers through both well-known national parks and lesser-visited areas, creating safaris grounded in timing, knowledge, and a deep understanding of Tanzania’s ecosystems.

Northern Tanzania Safari Destinations

Serengeti National Park

The Serengeti National Park is one of the most renowned Tanzania safari destinations, known for its vast open plains and the Great Migration. Millions of wildebeest, zebra, and gazelle move across the ecosystem in search of fresh grazing, attracting predators such as lions, cheetahs, and hyenas. A Serengeti safari offers year-round wildlife viewing, with different regions providing unique experiences depending on the season. Having spent years travelling through the Serengeti, we focus on timing and positioning, ensuring safaris are placed where wildlife activity is at its best, away from unnecessary crowds.

Ngorongoro Crater National Park

The Ngorongoro Crater is a unique safari destination in Tanzania, offering one of the highest concentrations of wildlife in Africa within a collapsed volcanic caldera. A Ngorongoro safari provides opportunities to see the Big Five in a relatively short period, with consistent sightings of lion, elephant, buffalo, and rhino. The landscape itself is as important as the wildlife, with grasslands, forests, and soda lakes all contained within the crater walls. Our experience allows us to navigate the crater efficiently, avoiding peak congestion while maximising time in the most productive areas.

Tarangire National Park

Tarangire National Park is often overlooked compared to the Serengeti and Ngorongoro, but it is one of the most rewarding Tanzania safari destinations, particularly during the dry season. Known for its large elephant herds and ancient baobab trees, Tarangire offers a quieter, more intimate safari experience. Wildlife concentrates along the Tarangire River, making game viewing highly productive. With detailed knowledge of the park, we focus on less-travelled areas and quieter routes, creating a more considered and unhurried experience.

Southern & Western Tanzania Safari Destinations

Ruaha National Park

Ruaha National Park is one of the largest and most remote safari destinations in Tanzania, offering a true wilderness experience far from the crowds of the northern circuit. A Ruaha safari is known for its strong predator populations, including lions, leopards, and wild dogs, as well as vast, untouched landscapes. The scale of Ruaha requires experience and patience to navigate effectively, and our familiarity with the region allows for safaris that are both productive and deeply immersive.

Nyerere National Park (Selous)

Formerly known as the Selous Game Reserve, Nyerere National Park is one of the most diverse safari destinations in Tanzania, combining traditional game drives with boat safaris along the Rufiji River. A Selous safari offers a different perspective, with strong populations of elephant, hippo, crocodile, and birdlife. The combination of land and water-based experiences makes it one of the most varied safari regions in the country.

Katavi National Park

Katavi National Park is among the most remote and untouched Tanzania safari destinations, attracting travellers looking for complete isolation and raw wildlife encounters. During the dry season, large numbers of hippos and crocodiles gather in shrinking water sources, creating intense and dramatic wildlife scenes. A Katavi safari is best suited to those seeking a deeper, more exploratory experience, far removed from traditional safari routes.

Mahale Mountains National Park

Mahale Mountains National Park offers one of the most unique safari experiences in Tanzania, combining forest trekking with the opportunity to see wild chimpanzees in their natural habitat. Located on the shores of Lake Tanganyika, Mahale is only accessible by boat or light aircraft, adding to its exclusivity. A Mahale safari is less about game drives and more about immersive, close-up encounters in a remote and strikingly beautiful environment.
